Assistant Professor in Public Law and Human Rights

Durham University - Law School

As a top 40 QS World Ranked law school, we’re proud to launch the careers of some of the UK’s most influential legal thinkers. Going on to achieve professional success both nationally and internationally in roles across The UK Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals and even becoming Members of Parliament, our graduates are a cut above the rest thanks to the dynamic research-led education that our academics provide. Bringing your expertise of Public Law and Human Rights to the team, you will become a key member of the Human Rights Centre, guiding the research capabilities of the students and mentoring PhD candidates as they strive to create world-class projects. This element of research will also play a large part of your working life with us, as we encourage applications for research leave (supported by a generous allowance) in which you may pursue your individual interests that will complement the studies of the school. Crucially, you will also deliver outstanding teaching across modules such as ‘The Individual and the State’ and ‘UK Constitutional Law’, pushing our students to achieve the absolute best of their capabilities.

You’ll need:

  • The ability to maintain student engagement in public law and human rights modules through creative teaching methods relayed via lectures, tutorials and seminars, with a particular emphasis on small-group teaching. You will also utilise technology and other techniques to enhance the student experience.
  • Accredited qualifications in teaching, or you will be committed to achieving these.
  • World-class research outputs that have made an impact, with a research plan outlining further ambitions. You should also have the ability to secure funding for your work via research project proposals.
  • Solid communication skills with the confidence to supervise PhD studies and lead research groups.
  • A good first degree with a PhD in Law or a related field.
