Senior Mechanical Workshop Technician

University College London - Division of Biosciences

Applications are invited for an exciting and creative post as a senior mechanical workshop technician working within the Mechanical Workshop of the Division of Biosciences at UCL. This is an opportunity to be part of a world-leading research institution and to contribute to that research.  The job of a technician is highly varied and covers both design, building and modification of bespoke scientific equipment for academic research staff and the maintenance/repair of essential laboratory electrical/electronic equipment. Biosciences is one of the largest research Divisions within UCL with 553 contracted staff. Its research income totals over £144m with an annual turnover of £50m. The Division’s research activity is multi-disciplinary in nature and spans structural and molecular biology through cells and tissues to organisms and populations. The environment is underpinned by research facilities and core infrastructure. Educational activity includes delivery of undergraduate programmes to approximately 1,300 science students and an expanding number of Masters Programmes. This post is a HEFCE-funded position and is available to start immediately.

Applicants must have relevant theoretical and practical knowledge of the design and construction of sophisticated scientific equipment.  Ideally, candidates will have experience using CAD and CNC technologies to build advanced, bespoke scientific tools in collaboration with researchers. A second important component of the job will be the maintenance and repair of pre-existing routine and specialised equipment. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate a basic working knowledge of MS Office, Excel, Word and Outlook. Programming experience is desirable and an ability and willingness to acquire new skills is essential.
