Research Fellow - Advanced Physical Layer Techniques and Implementation

The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) is looking to recruit two new Research Fellows in Advanced Physical Layer Techniques for 5G wireless communication systems, for an initial period up to the 31st March 2019.

ICS is home of the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC), the world’s first research centre dedicated to the advanced technologies that will underpin the 5G network of the future. The Centre is working in partnership with some of the world’s leading mobile network operators, infrastructure and tools providers, media and communications organisations, such as, BBC, BT, Cobham, EE, Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe, Huawei, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, Telefonica, Teoco and Vodafone, as well as the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom. The Centre is carrying out world-leading research into higher-capacity lower-energy mobile-communication networks.

The 5GIC is based in a purpose-built building at the University of Surrey. The 5GIC accommodates over 100 researchers from the University and its industrial partners and our 5G testbed equipment that supports a campus wide radio access network deployment outdoors.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who will be responsible for the ongoing research and development of Advanced Physical Layer Techniques and their Implementation for 5G Wireless Communication Systems.

The candidates must have demonstrable experience in at least one of the following:

  • Strong expertise in signal processing for wireless communication systems, very good understanding of communications theory and recent research experience in the development of advanced physical layer algorithms and systems.
  • Embedded real-time C/C++ development, SIMD optimizations and multiprocessing.
  • VLSI development of physical layer digital signal processing algorithms targeting high throughput and low-latency, preferably on FPGA platforms using RTL and HLS.
  • Track record of publications in highly ranked journals and conferences in at least one of the above fields

It would be desirable but not essential for the post holder to also have:

  • An understanding of the current and future challenges in 5G systems.
  • An overall working knowledge of cellular networks and a good understanding of the related standards.
  • Python and Linux shell scripting experience.
  • Prior experience with wireless research platforms (e.g., USRPs, WARPs)

Elements of this role will require a high degree of autonomy within your defined project area resolving potential conflicts in complex individual design projects whilst maintaining alignment with the overall 5G implementation strategy in cooperation with the 5GIC Proof-of-Concept Work Area Leader.
