If you’re keen to use your bookkeeping skills and your understanding of people management to help a small charity thrive then this job is for you. The right candidate will have experience of bookkeeping for a small organisation or charity and an understanding of the demands of running a small but busy office.

Purpose of the Role

We’re looking for an Office Manager and Bookkeeper who can manage a small team of employees and keep the Association’s books in order whilst the Executive Director is on maternity leave. You’ll work on some exciting projects whilst at UACES, including the 47th annual conference in Bath and the implementation of European-Commission-funded projects.

Main Responsibilities

  • All bookkeeping for the Association and drafting end of year accounts
  • Providing management and HR support to staff
  • Ensuring the office runs smoothly and efficiently
  • Oversight of all UACES activities
  • Liaising closely with the committee of trustees
  • Ensuring that the Association meets its obligations as a registered charity

Key Skills and Attributes

We're looking for an Office Manager & Bookkeeper who can show ability in a range of areas including:

  • Significant experience of bookkeeping for a small business or charity
  • Experience of managing staff and an understanding of the HR issues that a small organisation faces
  • An understanding of the day-to-day running of a small office
  • Solid administrative experience (including minute-taking, experience of databases etc)
  • Experience of working with charity trustees
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • An interest in academia, higher education and/or European studies.
  • A willingness to take on a variety of tasks as is required in a small organisation

Please don’t be discouraged if you don’t have all of the skills above.  Aptitude and transferable skills are equally important as we can offer training in some areas.

About UACES

UACES is a membership organisation for academics working in the area of European Studies. We have around 1000 members from across the UK and Europe. We run conferences, events and administer funding schemes to support our members. You'll be part of the small team whose job it is to run UACES. The office staff are responsible for ensuring the smooth-running of the association and are involved in the following activities:

  • Organising the UACES Annual Conference
  • Administering UACES funding opportunities
  • Running the UACES Prizes
  • Assisting with the publication of JCER, UACES’s open-access online journal (www.jcer.net).
  • Liaising with Wiley, the publishers of our print journal JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies
  • Managing the membership database
  • Managing the UACES email list
  • Writing and implementing successful grant applications to funders
