Salary: Grade 7
£30,688 - £38,833 per annum pro-rata. 
Potential to progress to £42,418 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution.

Contract: Fixed term from 1 April 2018 until 30 November 2022  


The University of Sheffield, School of Nursing & Midwifery has been awarded a prestigious five year contract to undertake a research strategic alliance with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and we are seeking to appoint a Research Associate to help deliver this exciting programme of work. This will involve the delivery of both programmatic and rapid review research activity aimed at influencing and evidencing nursing policy, education and clinical practice.

The core objectives of the strategic research alliance are:

  • To work collaboratively to produce excellent international quality research and evidence reviews to inform national and international nursing and health practice and policy, thus benefitting patients, families, health professionals and health outcomes;
  • To disseminate and share research findings to inform developments in education, practice and policy designed to improve nursing and health care;
  • To enhance public and user awareness of nursing issues;
  • To work alongside users, carers and stakeholders to ensure that the Alliance’s activities are significant, meaningful and timely;
  • To utilise research to inform educational programmes at the University of Sheffield, within the RCN and beyond.

We are looking for a Research Associate with a track record of undertaking nursing and/or health services research and a commitment to developing evidence to inform and impact upon the future of nursing practice and policy. The postholder will have a PHD or be nearing completion. You will have a recognised expertise in research and the ability to be self-directed in conducting projects they are responsible for. You will need to demonstrate ability to deliver research outputs, high quality peer-review publications and conference presentations. The postholder will be required to work with the support of senior academic colleagues and members of the Strategic Research Alliance team to deliver this prestigious and complex programme of work.

The postholder will be responsible for conducting both programmatic, primary research and rapid evidence reviews. Research areas will be decided collaboratively between the RCN and School as part of the Strategic Research Alliance. All activity will reflect RCN priorities and will link to nursing policy and practice.

The post provides an ideal postdoctoral opportunity to establish an academic career in the field of nursing and/or health services research. The post offers the ideal platform for progression to an academic post or suit those seeking to establish a long term research career. Alongside activities directly associated with the RCN strategic alliance, opportunities to develop postdoctoral expertise in a chosen field will be provided.
