Research Assistant/Fellow in International Relations

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in International Relations? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

You will work with Professor Jason Ralph (University of Leeds) and Dr Jess Gifkins (University of Manchester) on their project “The UK role and reputation as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council after the decision to leave the European Union”. The project is funded by the British Academy’s ‘Tacking the UK’s International Challenges’ programme. You will be based in Leeds and located within the School of Politics and International Studies and the European Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.

With at least a masters level degree (grade 6) or PhD (grade 7) in International Relations (or related area), and experience of qualitative research you will collect and analyse data to examine how the UK government has viewed its role at the United Nations (UN), how leaving the European Union (EU) has influenced the perceptions of that role; to examine whether the UK delegation in New York has changed its positions and practices; to examine whether Security Council perceptions of the UK’s status and practices as a permanent member have changed. You will also work with the project team to organise a project workshop.

You will possess excellent data collection, analytical and communication skills and the ability to deal with a variety of tasks to set deadlines. The ability to work alone and as part of a team are essential, along with strong organisational skills.

Salary: £26,495 to £38,833 p.a. The salary spine point is subject to external funding conditions, which will limit the salary at which an appointment can be made to a maximum of £35,550 p.a.
